therefore
Por lo tanto: breve historia de tres puntos Therefore: a short history of three dots
A modest English word, a mathematical sign, the most quoted line in philosophy and even a Billie Eilish song. They all turn on the same gesture: reaching a conclusion.
Dos piezas pequeñas, una idea grande.
Two small pieces, one big idea.
Therefore was formed from two very old English words: there, "that", and fore, which here is not today's "in front" but an old variant of for. Literally, for that. Spanish took almost the same route with por lo tanto: point at something already said, and lean on it to take one more step.
It is a modest word. It describes nothing and names nothing. Its job is different: it joins two ideas and tells the reader that the second follows from the first.
Tres puntos que anuncian un final.
Three dots that announce an ending.
Mathematicians, always in a hurry, shrank it to three dots arranged in a triangle. One of its first printed uses is credited to the Swiss mathematician Johann Rahn, in his Teutsche Algebra of 1659. For a while authors used it inconsistently, sometimes upright and sometimes upside down.
Over time, habit brought order: the triangle resting on its base means "therefore", and the inverted triangle means "because". One looks forward, the other looks back.
El "luego" más famoso de la historia.
The most famous "therefore" in history.
If one sentence made this word famous, it is Descartes'. In Latin, cogito, ergo sum. In English, it has been repeated millions of times like this:
I think, therefore I am.
The whole sentence hangs on that hinge. Without the therefore, we would only have two loose statements. With it, we have an argument.
En 2020, Billie Eilish publicó "Therefore I Am", escrita junto a su hermano Finneas.
In 2020, Billie Eilish released "Therefore I Am", written with her brother Finneas. As a rebellious wink, the title flips the cogito: Descartes used it to prove he existed, and Billie turns it into a statement of identity. Who I am, and that nobody else gets to tell my story.

Premises first. Then the conclusion.
The classic textbook example shows it better than any explanation:
Lo difícil no es tener datos.
The hard part isn't having data.
We gather more information than ever: figures, reports, documents, opinions. But information alone decides nothing. The value comes afterwards, in the small leap from "this is what we know" to "therefore, this is what we do".
Perhaps that is why such a short word is worth remembering. Everything before it prepares the way. What matters begins at the therefore.
